AAA 2027 Pre-Conference Sessions - Thursday, March 18
Morning Session
Growing Into the Academy: Three Transitions for Early-Career Scholars
Co-Chairs: Kacy Kim (Bryant University), Ray Taylor (Villanova), and Scott Koslow (Macquarie University)
The American Academy of Advertising (AAA) invites doctoral students and early-career faculty to a half-day pre-conference symposium exploring how academic careers develop beyond publishing. Through personal stories, candid conversations, and lessons learned, experienced scholars will share their journeys, challenges, and unexpected opportunities across three key transitions: From Author to Reviewer, From Reviewer to Editorial Roles, and From AI User to Responsible Scholar.
Moving beyond traditional publishing workshops or “Meet the Editors” sessions, this symposium highlights the experiences that shape scholars' professional growth—from learning to provide constructive peer reviews and giving back to the academic community, to taking on editorial responsibilities and navigating the opportunities and ethical challenges of AI in research. Combining personal career stories with engaging panel discussions, the symposium offers practical insights, fresh perspectives, and opportunities to connect with fellow scholars and mentors.
Afternoon Session
Teach It, Test It: Classroom Applications and Research Directions from the Journal of Advertising Special Issue on Generative AI
Co-chairs: Colin Campbell (University of San Diego) and Jisu Huh (University of Minnesota Twin Cities)
Generative AI has become hard to avoid in advertising courses and research agendas alike, but much of what gets taught about it still rests on trade press and anecdote. This half-day pre-conference brings together the authors of the Journal of Advertising’s special issue on generative AI and advertising to present their work. The first panel looks at how consumers detect, judge and adapt to AI-made advertising. The second examines the shift from discrete ads to ongoing relationships with conversational and agentic AI. The third explores how generative AI is remaking creative work, campaigns and measurement. Every presentation ends with concrete suggestions for bringing the findings into the classroom and the research questions they open up and a discussant closes each panel by drawing the threads together. Attendees will also leave with a companion packet containing a one-page teaching guide and a list of open research questions prompted by the special issue. The session should be useful to anyone updating a course or researching in generative AI.
